Apple announced iOS 5.0 today and it’s coming this fall. Here is a quick rundown of some of the features.
PC Free - Apple is cutting the cord on iOS. Finally. I’ve said before that the biggest problem with the iPad is that the first thing you have to do is plug it into a computer. With the release of iOS 5 you don’t have to do that. The hardware will work right out of the box and even update over the air. In my opinion this is a huge announcement for the future of iPad.
Notifications - We finally get new notifications on iOS with Notification Center. A single place to manager your notifications. You’ll also get an alert on the top of your screen, where clock is, so it won’t interrupt the app you are currently in. Thank you. To go a step beyond you can jump into an app right from the lock screen. So if you get a text message you can unlock your phone directly into that message. A huge leap in the right direction.
Twitter - It’s hard wired into every app now just like email, and MMS. You can tweet from Safari, YouTube and Maps. Really interesting. Apple is betting hard on Twitter.

You need to download Winterboard for this to work.
UPDATE: Winterboard installs automatically.
Before you jailbreak, you must download the latest version of redsnow (redsn0w_0.9.6rc11) from here.
Also download the IPSW for iOS 4.3.1 from here.
If you are running Windows 7, you will need to right click on redsn0w.exe, select properties, click the compatibility tab, and select:
Then, when you double click it, go to task manager, click “show processes from all users” to give you admin control, then right click “redsn0w.exe”, select Set Affinity, then make sure only CPU 1 is checked.
Now you can proceed following the instructions found here.
April Fools Day: Fox 5 News anchor managed to convince his co-host, during a live newscast, that a new iPhone/iPad app would allow her to taste/smell the images on the screen.

I have poo-pooed Dropbox for a while now, but honestly, it is awesome (and FREE).
I’m using it to sync any active work files from my work laptop, and these can now be available on my iphone, ipad, personal laptop, and any computer with an internet connection. My goal is to be able to stop dragging around my work laptop when I travel, and be able to work from my iPad.
Give it a try, it’s FREE!
I had a friend tell me yesterday that she won’t get an iPhone because she won’t subscribe to an American trend. She told me this over Beluga from her Android phone… Looks like she is officially subscribing to the number one smart-phone American trend afterall.
I think both Android and iPhone have their positives and negatives, I just prefer Apple devices. I think the overall quality of the device itself is better and more consistent, than the multitude of manufacturers spitting out sub-par touch screens. That being said, quality Android devices DO indeed exist, but it’s just turning into another Apple vs. PC debate. The only difference here is that Apple is actually affordable.
My computers will likely always be PC’s, but my mobile devices will always be Apple. With the iPad 2 coming with iMovie and Garage Band, I’ll have the best of both worlds.
One last thought here, and that is that no matter how great Android is, it will always be playing catch-up. It may be more open-source, and sometimes put “what the user wants” on before Apple does (camera, multi-tasking, etc), but at the end of the day, it has to if it wants to compete.
wahh wahhhh AT&T’s network is faster!
How to truly beat the system:
I’m on AT&T, on my parent’s family plan, so I pay around $45 a month for grandfathered-in unlimited data plan, 200 text messages, and shared minutes with my parents. I also have a jailbroken phone, so I don’t pay more for tethering, it’s free. I live in the mountains in a county with maybe 7k people, and while there are dead spots here and there, my data is pretty damn fast.
Why would I switch to Verizon? Especially when most people up here use Verizon, and I’d have to take myself off a family plan?
I’m glad there is a Verizon iPhone, because it takes heat off AT&T, and more of my friends will get an iphone, which means more iphone to iphone fun.
For those of you AT&T iPhone users that are not on an unlimited data plan and want one, just threaten to switch the Verizon. Reports are that AT&T is offering an unlimited plan as incentive to stay.
Not that I would ever pay for an eBook, but if I had considered it, Apple just talked me out of it. I’ll continue to get my free eBooks from Stanza’s free source. And for those of you that scoff at me for it, I love books, and download eBooks to either decide if it’s a book I’d want to buy, or to have a digital version of a book I already own. Scoff away. The only book that won’t open in iBooks for me is Winnie-the-Pooh. Pooh pooh.
The Verizon iPhone is happening, and it could be TODAY! Starting at 9am Mountain Time, tune in to Verizon’s live event that most are speculating will announce the new Verizon iPhone.
It’s about time! worth the wait! I’m excited to finally upgrade to 4.1.
I noticed this this morning, it looks IDENTICAL to the Twitter app. Though I do love this feature and am glad it’s in the facebook app, you’d think they’d at least “try” to make it look like their own…
Awesomely dorky. For those of you that just can’t part with your iPhone for writing normal notes, or those of you that don’t have an iPhone that really want one.
